I just saw Send Help with Dylan O’Brien and Rachel McAdams. It was comedic and violent. It reminded me of a problematic Adam sandler movie. Rachel is a long tenure employee at a firm where Dylan O’Brien’s character has just taken over after his father retired. There is an open executive position where O’Brien’s character constantly overlooks McAdam’s character to his own pompous friends due to McAdam’s old fashioned and messy character. To be fair, O’Brien offers her to prove herself on a business trip which is then cut short due to a plane crash. The two survive on the island despite bickering, violent fights and failed betrayals. McAdams is very prepared due to her outdoors lifestyle and survival training while O’Brien’s yuppy executive position has no use in the wilderness. Secrets are revealed uncovering the characters dark sides. In the end McAdam’s overwhelming feeling of underserved subservience, survival training, and survival of the fittest attitude gets her back to civilization alone richer than ever before. The movie made you think about gender norms and how the status quo is broken when one knows more than the other in situations like this. It also makes you think about McAdam’s survival of the fittest attitude amplified by her unappreciated strong work ethic and how it boiled over when she had the upper hand. The survival of the fittest attitude is also seen in the plane crash revealing what all of O’Brien’s pompous yuppy friends would do to survive hinting at common conceptions of executive competitiveness. Overall it is a good comedic thriller with violent bursts that keep building on the different themes throughout the movie keeping you in tune.
